A modern home in Scottsdale, Arizona (Sincuidados)
Eric Spry, Spry Architecture
The Woz Macy Home is a 4,400-square-foot modern desert residence located within Sincuidados, one of Scottsdale’s most exclusive and naturally rugged communities. Designed by Eric Spry of Spry Architecture, this home transforms a challenging lot — previously rejected by multiple buyers — into a striking example of contemporary architecture deeply rooted in its environment. Set on a parcel constrained by a substantial natural wash that renders nearly one-third of the lot unbuildable, the design required bold creativity, strategic planning, and perseverance — both from the architect and the clients. The resulting home is a testament to the possibilities of modern design in traditionally conservative neighborhoods.
Despite the site’s limitations, the Woz Macy Home is perfectly oriented to capture unobstructed views of the mountains to the west and southwest, maximizing the most desirable natural features of the property. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing lines the primary living spaces, bringing light and desert views deep into the home. Deep roof overhangs provide essential solar protection from the Arizona sun, allowing the home to embrace passive cooling strategies while maintaining clean, modern lines. The architectural massing and site layout respect the land’s natural flow while carefully avoiding encroachment into the wash.
Built in a neighborhood with a historically conservative design review board (DRB), the Woz Macy Home boldly defies convention with a distinctly modern material palette and minimalist form. The exterior finishes are restrained, sleek, and contemporary, standing as a tribute to the clients’ vision and persistence in pursuing a modern architectural lifestyle within Sincuidados.
The Woz Macy Home represents more than just beautiful modern architecture — it’s a study in overcoming site constraints, regulatory resistance, and design limitations to create something timeless. It showcases Spry Architecture’s expertise in transforming difficult desert lots into serene, view-rich, livable homes that redefine what's possible in Arizona’s luxury communities.
