    The Chaten House is a custom-designed modern residence located on a secluded two-acre site in Ridgeview Estates, an exclusive desert community in Carefree, Arizona, just north of Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix Valley. This home exemplifies modern residential architecture that harmonizes with the Sonoran Desert while offering stunning panoramic views.

  • Woven into the Sonoran Desert

    The site boasts full north-facing views of Carefree’s Black Mountain, with native desert vegetation and striking boulder formations integrated into the design experience. The architecture responds directly to the landscape — the home’s layout wraps around the central view of Black Mountain, ensuring that every major living space — including the living room, dining area, kitchen, and primary bedroom — maintains a strong visual connection to the desert horizon. A soaring roof encloses the open-concept great room, sloping from low on the north side to high on the south. This strategic roofline frames the distant mountain peaks and expansive Arizona sky, creating a dramatic and light-filled interior. The home features a modern H-shaped floor plan, which separates the private bedroom wings from the central living core. Each bedroom is positioned at the end of the “H,” surrounded by three walls of glass, providing immersive views, natural light, and privacy. At the heart of the plan is the spacious great room — open, airy, and perfect for modern living. The interior design, completed by homeowner Kathy Chaten, complements the architectural vision with refined, contemporary finishes that emphasize natural textures and indoor-outdoor fluidity. The collaboration between architect and client resulted in a seamless blend of modern desert architecture and thoughtful interior design.
